17 Strangers, 2006

17 Strangers was part of the Gallery Gardens exhibition which took place in the Eli and Edythe Broad Plaza at the Caltrans Building, 100 S. Main Street, Los Angeles, California.

The Plaza has virtually no landscaping and the only colors are the gray and silver of the concrete, bollards and building with a splash of red neon on the building facade. To me the space felt stark, cool and somewhat intimidating. I became interested in transforming it into a garden by pulling nature into a barren setting. The existing bollards gave me a perfect opportunity as they already seemed to be straining towards the organic in their shape and stance.
